Speaking of beginnings, hubby and I just saw Maleficent. When I sighed halfway through the movie and said, "This should have been so good" hubby asked why.
The first HALF of the movie was backstory. It was beautifully filmed and kinda interesting, but the real story started when she cursed Aurora. There's no two ways around it. All of the best scenes were of Maleficent with Aurora. Sure, we needed to know WHY Maleficent was so angry and hateful, but it was backstory and would have been more powerful if it had been woven into the story.
Have you seen it? Imagine if we really thought Mal was evil right from the start, if we had no idea why she would do something so dreadful as to lay a curse on an innocent baby. Imagine how powerful it would be if we didn't know Mal had been viciously wronged by someone she loved, if her backstory was revealed to us in tantalizing flashes. It could've been a really great movie instead of merely a good one.
I think there's a lesson to be learned here...not sure what it is...keep looking, maybe it'll come to me....
